Welcome from Chair of Governors

Welcome from Chair of Governors

A message from the Chair of Governors

Picture1I am delighted and honoured to be the Chair of Governors for Islington Futures Federation of Community Schools. I have been a governor in Islington since 2010, when I joined the board of Elizabeth Garret Anderson School. I spent five years as Chair there, during which time the school moved into its current premises and achieved a further outstanding rating from Ofsted, becoming a school of choice for girls in the area.

In 2015 we teamed up with Copenhagen School in a federation, helping them to reach their current good standard rating. We saw real benefits for both schools; the secondary school gained a much better understanding of the learning and capability at primary level, helping to improve the transition and the primary benefited from access to the management resources of a much larger school.

As a governing body we are committed to continuing a close relationship with our local authority. We also recognise that all of our students, young and older, do much better if all the schools in their area work together to provide high quality education. This only becomes more important against a backdrop of financial challenges.

This is why, when we were approached by two local schools interested in joining our federation, we decided that we would be stronger together.

The first, Vittoria Primary School, was at the point of recruiting a new head teacher but already had an excellent deputy who, with the support of our Executive Head has stepped up to become a first rate leader for the school.

The second, Holloway School, was a secondary that has suffered from a number of head teacher changes in recent years and was last rated as “requires improvement”. We have prioritised necessary changes in the immediate term, as well as an on-going process of transformation that will in September see Holloway become Beacon High, a new secondary school for Tufnell Park. We are determined that this school will offer a new experience for our students.

Creating a new school is not easy. We are fortunate to have the support - in terms of expertise and financial backing, of our local authority and the fantastic opportunities afforded in being part of the Islington Community of Schools. We also have our excellent staff group working closely with our amazing students and engaging with our parents and carers, all of whom only want the best for their children.

Islington Futures only began on 13th September 2018, so these are still early days but cross federation roles are already enabling us to bring in expertise at an affordable level and support from our Executive Head Jo Dibb, a national leader of education, is already having a positive impact on both staff and pupils. We are sharing issues and experiences across our schools and learning from one other. We benefit from an excellent team of highly experienced and skilled Governors and Associates, all giving of their time, expertise, enthusiasm and good humour, to work to improve the life chances of all of the students in our federation of schools.

Our goal is for each of our schools to become the school of choice for their area, just like we achieved with EGA through a dedicated process of engagement, development and a lot of hard work!

If you would like to know more about any of our schools, or about joining our governing body, please do contact us by emailing
